HAVANA, January 28 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad) - All these years that a Communist system has prevailed in Cuba, the news media have been completely at the service of the State; information from abroad, of whatever nature, is carefully inspected and the parts that are not convenient are
excised. What is eventually disseminated is useful to the system; the inconvenient parts are called ideological diversionism.
Cubans are kept apart from the world by a vast expanse of water and by the lack of information, but they have grown tired of listening and seeing the point of view provided by the Communist regime, whether in culture, politics or sports, and have been trying for a long time to acquire opinions
free of the control of the Cuban government.
Every time they take a step in that direction they meet with threats from the authorities. A few months ago, those who owned antennas capable of receiving, in Havana, TV signals from the United States were forced to take them down under threats of fines or other repressive measures. |
