Recycled Clothing

Haydée Rodríguez, APLO

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, January - The idea of selling used clothing, which is now called recycled, is nothing more than what is known elsewhere as flea markets, where one can buy used clothing at very low prices.

The clothes come in bales, usually worn, faded, torn and dirty. They are distributed by several commercial concerns and are sold in the former stores of the almost phased-out Industrial Products Enterprise. The most significant are the large stores selling in the national currency. Some samples:

"El Encanto"

Long sleeve dress ...... 80 pesos

Short sleeve dress ...... 75 pesos

Blouses ............................... 40 pesos

Women's slacks ............. 95 pesos

Skirts ................................... 40 pesos

"El Siglo XX"

Long sleeve dresses ....... 85 y 90 pesos

Short sleeve dresses ....... 75 pesos

Blouses ................................... 40 pesos

Skirts .................................... 35 y 40 pesos

Women's slacks ................. 130 pesos

Men's trousers ............... 95 pesos

Women's Pullovers ................... 85 pesos

Children's Pullovers ...................... 35 pesos

Men's shirts ................ 40 pesos

"Ten Cent o Variedades Enramadas"

Long sleeve dresses ......... 62 pesos

Short sleeve dresses ......... 57 pesos

Blouses .................................... 33 pesos

Skirts ..................................... 32 pesos

Women's slacks ............... 33 pesos

Women's Pullovers .................. 42 pesos

Misses Pullovers ............. 32 pesos

Children's Pullovers (small and well-worn) .......... 10 pesos

Men's shirts ................. 40 pesos

The same used clothing is sold also in the dollar stores, such as "La

Tri-Continental":

Dresses ............... 4.90, 6.75 and 7.15 (102.90, 141.75 and 160.15 pesos)

Blouses ......... 5.25 (110.25 pesos)

Skirts ............... 5.25 (110.25 pesos)

Shorts ....................... 3.00 (63 pesos)

Bath Robes ......... 3.45 (72.45 pesos)

Men's Trousers ............... 7.50 (157.50 pesos)

Men's Shirts ............. 2.25 and 3.00 (47.25 and 63 pesos)

These prices are not in line with the average salary of the people who shop at these stores because they need clothing.
