Foster's reporter to accompany Portsmouth students to Cuba

Foster's Daily Democrat. Friday, February 18, 2000

PORTSMOUTH —A reporter from Foster's Daily Democrat will accompany 19 Portsmouth High School students on a week-long trip to Cuba beginning Saturday.

Former Democrat staff writer Brian DeKoning will be corresponding with the paper throughout the next week. He is scheduled to leave with the group Saturday morning from Pease, where they will fly to Montreal and then on to Cuba.

The students will be accompanied by Joe Arnstein, a Latin teacher from the High School and organizer of the event, Assistant Principal Robert Lister, and other chaperones from the school and community. The trip is designed to give students a historical and cultural perspective of the communist island.

It is the first trip of its kind by a local high school and was initially met by skepticism from both the Portsmouth City Council and the Portsmouth School Board due to political tension between the United States and Cuba, the recent custody battle of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez and insurance concerns.

After careful consideration, it was determined there was adequate insurance and the trip did not pose a threat to the students.
