HAVANA, August 1 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - Five inmates considered
leaders of a May 1999 rebellion at the notorious "Kilo Ocho" prison in
Camagüey province recently got 20 to 28 years added to their original
sentences.
Miguel Díaz Bauza and Ernesto Durán Rodríguez got 20
years, Carlos Atencio 26, and Freddy Frómeta and Alberto Gamboa 28.
They were involved in a disturbance of May 13, 1999 protesting the treatment
at the facility. The prisoners' complaints included torture and beatings by the
prison guards, arbitrary suspension of visiting priviledges, quality and
quantity of the food and neglegible medical attention.
A dissident watchdog group, "Grupo Padre Olayo de Apoyo a Presos Políticos
y a sus Familiares", in Camagüey, said that the trial of the five
went swiftly: the prosecutor read the charges and the judge read the sentence.
The accused did not speak.
