HAVANA, August 3 (Edel José García, CNP) - Workers at the
electrical generating plant in Havana's Jesús María district fear
the facility has became a danger because of obsolescence and lack of parts.
"My colleagues and I feel that at any time there could be a fatal
accident because of the many technical problems," said one worker at the
Otto Parellada plant who requested anonymity. "Death is something we have
in mind during our work shifts."
A mechanic at the plant said it should be closed down and replaced because
the technology is obsolete and there is a lack of parts for proper maintenance.
"It's a constant source of air pollution and the danger of a accident hangs
over hundreds of families in the area," he said.
One resident who lives near the plant said it belched smoke and made a
deafening noise when restarted after being closed to observe Environmental Day.
"A black cloud hung over the district for a long time," he said.
Another resident echoed fears expressed by the workers at the plant. "At
any time there could be an explosion that kills many neighbors," he said.
The official press has not carried any news about the plant.
