Outgoing Cuban ambassador makes farewell call on President Khatami

Islamic Republic News Agency. August 7, 2001.

Tehran, Aug 7, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami here on Tuesday received the outgoing Cuban Ambassador to Tehran Dario De Urra

Torriente.

At the meeting, Khatami described the relations between Iran and Cuba from the early days of the Islamic Revolution as brotherly and friendly and said that the relations entered a new phase in the past four year.

Referring to the exchange of visits between the high ranking officials of the two countries and describing it as a turning point in Tehran-Havana relations, the president underlined the need for expansion of all-out relations mainly in the economic, commercial,

technical and scientific fields.

Highlighting the extension of sanctions against Iran and Cuba by the U.S., he called the sanction illogical, immoral and against international rules and principles and is considered as blatant interference by the U.S. in the internal affairs of countries.

The Cuban ambassador, for his part, referred to the exchange of visits between the high ranking officials and called it a sign of willingness of Iranian and Cuban officials to further broaden and consolidate mutual relations.

In conclusion, he praised President Khatami for his role in upgrading the level of bilateral ties and establishing stability in the Middle East region.
