Residents remonstrate against police who beat up drunken youth

HOLGUIN, August 24 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) More than 100 residents of Moa, in Holguín province, remonstrated against two policemen who beat up a drunken 23-year-old man.

The victim of the beating, Franklin Cutiño Tito, helped himself to a cloth from the inside of patrol car 914 to dry his face. This evidently provoked officers Montes and Laffita, of the National Revolutionary Police, to beat him up. A mob of about 100 congregated in the area and protested the officers' actions. Police reacted with even more violence, beating and arresting one of the demonstrators, a pedicab owner.

When the protesters became enraged with the increased beatings, the officers retreated before the situation got out of hand, leaving their prisoners behind.
