CIENFUEGOS, November 20 (Ramón Guillermo Medina, Cuba-Verdad /
CubaNet) An official working with the Popular Power (local government) in
Aguada de Pasajeros, a town in south-central Cuba, uses his government-assigned
vehicle for private profit, says a labor union official in neighboring Matanzas
province.
The official, Fidel Morejón, was on an official trip to the Cuban
capital on the National Highway when he stopped to pick up his accuser, who was
hitchhiking. The would-be passenger offered Morejón 10 pesos for a lift,
but Morejón demanded 20 and left him standing by the side of the road.
The man, who turned out to be a local official with the Cuban Workers
Union, noticed the plates on the car were government plates and took down the
number.
So far, Morejón has kept his position with the Popular Power, which
aggravates the townspeople. Said one, "If it had been a regular citizen
caught in that type of activity, he could be fined and even have the car
confiscated, but since it is an official, the matter is dropped and he continues
doing the same."
