CIEGO DE AVILA, January 3 (Léster Téllez Castro, APLA /
www.cubanet.org) - Two inmates escape from the National Police (NPR) station in
Ciego de Avila while being taken to do some unpaid work for the officers.
José Ramón Pérez González, 26 years old, and
Luis Miguel Ortega, 22 years old, escaped from the police station after the
officer Sosa took them out of the cell to paint the offices.
According to the source, the inmates were waiting at the station for an
appeal trial.
"José Ramón Pérez González gave himself up
after some hours and said the escape was pointed to protest for the abuses that
are inflicted on prisoners in Cuba", related the source. The whereabouts of
the other fugitive, Luis Miguel Ortega, are still unknown.
According to the information, the police officer Sosa pressured Pérez
González into not revealing they were going on their way to an unpaid
work.
According to national norms no inmate should work without pay.
Both Gonzalez and Ortega were sentenced to two years in jail for theft, and
they are residents of Pidrecita, Céspedes, Camagüey province.
