Food spoils when it rains

HAVANA, Octubre 1 (Amarilis Cortina Rey, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - A sign posted at the distribution point for rationed foodstuffs in Managua, a town south of Havana, advises patrons to "Please, come pick up your merchandise as we receive it, because otherwise it gets wet."

The establishment, known locally as the "Mini-Max," has plenty of leaks in its roof and should have been repaired years ago, according to local residents, but local officials have instead posted the sign. "That's the only solution that occurred to them," said one resident.

One "Mini-Max" employee explained: "For us, it's very hard to keep dry what little food we get to distribute to the population."
