Havana, October 14 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) -
Matanzas civil employees has refused to released a mail package of books shipped
from Spain, that has been donated to the independent library "Doctor Pedro
Vazquez Estorino", arguing that this library is not recognized by the
government.
They also explained to Jorge Berriel Rodríguez, the library director,
that the books where collecting fees for staying at the post office.
"This is not the first time. They always find an excuse for
confiscating censored material", explained Manuel Infante Rodriguez,
Director of the Democratic Independent Libraries Project. "Incidents like
this one contradict Castro's 1998 words: 'There are no banned books in Cuba,
only those that we have no money to buy', said Infante.
Independent libraries are the alternative to state-run libraries, offering
books and cultural activities which evade the limitations and censorship imposed
by the government. They are supported by international donations and run in
private homes.
