Provinces unhappy about state of schools

Fara Armenteros, UPECI

HAVANA, September (www.cubanet.org) - The recent campaign of accelerated school repairs did not extend to the provinces and many residents are not hiding their unhappiness.

Many buildings are plagued by leaks and useless bathrooms. Furnishings go from deteriorated to non-existent, with one case, a school in Granma province, in which students have been taught outdoors since last year because the building isn’t finished.

The repair plan in Santiago de Cuba included 10 schools that haven’t been completed. Students at the Cristóbal Méndez school, in El Cristo were sent home at the beginning of the year because the bathrooms were destroyed.

Some parents say the schools’ deterioration goes back decades. In many cases, they end up repairing things like desks themselves, and lending the schools fans from home to cool down the classrooms.
