Cuban teacher collecting signatures for Varela project fired

HAVANA, Cuba, November 1 (www.cubanet.org) - Valentín Cabrera, a physical education teacher at the Enrique Galarraga middle school, was fired after five years of service for being engaged in collecting signatures for the Varela project.

Cabrera said two officers of the Department of State Security visited the school's principal, Paulina Morejón, and told her he is a counter revolutionary who belongs to dissident groups and who is engaged in collecting signatures for the Varela Project, an unconstitutional document.

Cabrera, who had been working at the school for five years, was arrested briefly March 18 when he happened to be at the home of dissident Pedro Pablo Álvarez at the time police came to arrest him and search his home. At that time, Cabrera was taken to the police unit on Zanja Street and released the next morning.
