Conjunctivitis extends to central provinces in Cuba

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, October 7 (www.cubanet.org) - The outbreak of conjunctivitis reported out of Havana in the last few weeks not seems to be spreading to the central Cuban provinces.

Health authorities in Santa Clara confirmed last week 46 cases in the town of Camajuaní, mostly among school-age children, but doctors in the city of Santa Clara proper said the outbreak is present throughout the province.

Schools in Manicaragua municipality had to be closed in September to forestall the spread of the disease.

Part of the problem is that a local drug that could be effective against the disease is in scarce supply, reducing doctors to recommending patients wash their eyes with boiled water and launder their towels often.
