Cuban consumers wait in line to buy U. S.
ground chicken
SANTA CLARA, Cuba, February 1 (www.cubanet.org)
- Santa Clara residents waited in long lines
January 30 when U. S. ground chicken went
on sale at the La Cadena store in the city,
even though they said the price of 23 pesos
a pound were high by Cuban standards.
For their time and money, consumers got
to look at a rare sight here, 40-pound cardboard
boxes clearly labeled "Made in USA"
and stamped with US Department of Agriculture
seals, from Peco Foods in Canton, Mississippi.
They also got packages clearly marked with
an expiration date of September, 2004, which
they readily noticed, as a common complaint
here is the lack of quality of goods sold.
"You can eat this, even if it is expensive;
at least you know you are eating something
legitimate which is not past its expiration
date," said one well-dressed man who
bought several pounds.
Recently, chicken packed in Atlanta by
Goldkist was sold at subsidized prices under
the quota system, but only at the rate of
a pound per person.
The chicken, consumers noted, was packed
for sale to Russia, so the labels were in
English and Russian.
