Sugar mill idled for lack of water

RANCHUELO, Cuba, February 17 (Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Severe drought conditions in Ranchuelo and vicinity paralyzed operations on the Ifraín Alfonso sugar mill, formerly known as the Santa María, as of February 13.

The Alfonso mill is one of four in the municipality that have been idled by drought conditions. The municipality is the highest sugar producer in Villa Clara province, and as such, has been called the Capital of the Recovery, but production has been cut to almost nothing half way through the harvest.

Idled mill workers have been awaiting the final decision of sugar ministry officials.
